"Gus Martinez was the Principal in Residence for our division when I was a first year principal. I loved his visits every month, when he coached me through things that I was working on as a novice—how to handle a staff issue, how to address a parent concern, how to change school culture, etc. He never told me his ideas at first, but helped me think through it myself, asking me probing questions to help me get “unstuck.” At times, he would share his ideas from his experiences, which were also very powerful.
